This book tells the story of Adam Latham, a young man who works as a clerk in a New York City bank. After being falsely accused of embezzlement, he flees the city and finds work as a surveyor on the construction of the Erie Canal. Along the way, he falls in love with a woman named Hannah, who is engaged to another man. As he works on the canal, Adam faces numerous challenges and obstacles, but he remains determined to prove his innocence and win Hannah’s heart.
